and just to point out one reason old cars were death traps, check out the A pillar on this. specifically where the pillar meets the forward door aperture. Look how that spindly little pillar is a separate piece from the bulkhead, and is joined at an odd angle with a bend in the overall shape.

in pretty much any offset or angled frontal collision, that’s just going to fold up like tin foil and let the structure collapse. It’s basically there just to have something to hang the doors on and provides no protection whatsoever.

in contrast, here’s the body side of a Chrysler 200:

yes, the whole side of the car is one stamping. See how the A-pillar blends smoothly down into the forward aperture, which is enormous compared to the car above? when this is joined to the mating body panels that pillar/aperture will become a boxed member and will be incredibly rigid. Which is why in a lot of cases, even after a 40 mph offset collision, you have a good chance of still being able to open the door.

end hijack

Yes, but the Chrysler 200 looks stupid.

I’ve often wondered if there were a way to take a classic car like this and re-engineer what’s underneath to be stronger /safer. Reading this, my guess is no .

It was just an example. Most vehicles are built this way now

It was a poor attempt at humor. Chrysler 200 and any other nondescript modern sedan=safe, thoroughly engineered yet insufferably boring cocoons, whereas c lassic Camarobird= half-ass thrown together and they’ll kill you, but way bitchin’ .

Very cool, looking forward to seeing it in the bare metal. That is always satisfying!

yeah, ‘cos an old -180 hp Camarobird is way more bitchin’ than a new 450+ hp Camarostang.

I know. Can't believe it's gotten this far.  Can't wait to see it paintless!

Add a roll cage. Full NASCAR cage if you’re really worried.
